AeroPress with Fellow Prismo Brew Guides

Updated: Sep 18, 2023

So you're an espresso fan or just like really strong coffee. Maybe you're the type that asks the coffee shop to put 4 or more shots in a thermos to keep you going for that long trip (ask me how I used to stay caffeinated flying to Europe). But espresso machines are expensive, not very portable and not found in most hotel rooms. Unless you're like this guy and just bring your machine along with your luggage.

Enter the Fellow Prismo attachment for the AeroPress. Adding a whole new dimension of brewing capability to your AeroPress. Replacing the standard filter cap, it has its own filter cap with a pressure activated valve and metal filter lined with a rubber gasket.

Pull a single "espresso" shot or an extra large shot. Drink it straight or dilute to make an Americano. Since the valve is pressure activated, you can brew a regular cup of coffee with no drips from the cap until you apply pressure with the plunger. The AeroPress cap diameter can be too big to brew into certain vessels like a thermos, but the small center valve overcomes this allowing you to brew into vessels of any size.

Above all others, your AeroPress should not be without this accessories. Visit our shop for your Fellow Prismo.

Espresso Shot

Coffee: 20 grams

Grind: Fine (about 1.0 setting on Aerspeed Hand Grinder)

Water: 50 grams (or 40-60 grams based on preferred taste & shot size)

Ratio: 1:2.5

Brew Time: 1:15

  1. Attach the Prismo

  2. Place AeroPress on top of the vessel you are brewing into.

  3. Add ground coffee into the AeroPress.

  4. Start your timer.

  5. Pour 50 grams of water or to the "1" mark. Stir vigorously for ~20 seconds to saturate grounds and increase extraction.

  6. At 1:00 press the plunger all the way down.

Americano: Pull the shot above then add another 270 grams of water (or to preferred taste).

Affogato: Pull the shot above over a scoop of ice cream

The Big Espresso Shot

Coffee: 40 grams

Grind: Fine (about 1.2 setting on Aerspeed Hand Grinder)

Water: 100 grams

Ratio: 1:2.5

Brew Time: 2:30

  1. Place a paper filter inside the cap and rinse with water. Or metal filter and no rinse.

  2. Attach cap to AeroPress body and place on top of the vessel you are brewing into.

  3. Add ground coffee into the AeroPress.

  4. Start your timer.

  5. Pour 100 grams of water. Stir vigorously for ~20 seconds to saturate and increase extraction.

  6. At 1:00 press plunger all the way down. Larger brew will take longer than above, but change in grind size will prevent over extraction.

Full Immersion Brew

Get the benefits of a full immersion brew without the tricky and potentially messy cap and flip of the AeroPress inverted method. Brew upright and the Prismo will keep all the coffee contained until you apply pressure with the plunger. Play with the grind size and brew time to hone your cup.

Coffee: 18 grams (for a 10 oz cup)

Grind: Medium-Fine (about 1.7 setting on Aerspeed Hand Grinder)

Water: 290 grams

Ratio: 1:16

Brew Time: 2:00-2:15

  1. Attach the Prismo and its metal filter in place of the standard AeroPress cap and place on top of your brew vessel.

  2. Add 18 grams of ground coffee.

  3. Start your timer

  4. Pour in 290 grams of water

  5. Give a light stir to ensure water and grounds are fully mixed.

  6. Put plunger in place

  7. At 1:15 begin a slow, steady press until finishing about 2:15 (feel free to play with these times to adjust the taste of your brew.

Cold Brew

Coffee: 25 grams

Grind: Coarse

Water: 250 grams

Ratio: 1:10 (account for dilution with ice melt)

Brew Time: 12-24 hours

  1. Attach the Prismo and its metal filter to the AeroPress

  2. Add 25 grams of coarsely ground coffee

  3. Pour in 250 of room temp water

  4. Stir to fully saturate ground

  5. Place plunger into the top of the AeroPress, but do not press

  6. Place in refrigerator for 12-24 hours (longer time = more extraction, grind finer for more extraction in shorter time).

  7. 12-24 hours later remove from refrigerator and press into drinking vessel

  8. Add ice and enjoy.
